HIVER Mini-Unit - Novice Mid/High - Intermediate Low - 5 janvier 2018
TIMELINE: 3-4 class periods, approximately 50 minute classes
TECHNOLOGY: Chromebooks/computers with speakers
PRIOR KNOWLEDGE ACTIVATED: Both levels have worked with weather, clothing and winter holiday vocabulary.
RESOURCES I SCAVENGED
TeachersPayTeachers - French winter find someone who…
Quizlet set - Hiver - copied from another user and edited/added - IMAGE TO FRENCH WORD
EDPUZZLE - Region de Quebec en hiver - De la neige en abondance (search copy edited by Dawn Michael to see my questions)
Question - Google Classroom - First day after winter break, used a multiple choice question asking how their break was. Complete sentence answer choices using conversational expressions. Same question both levels
Vocabulary Introduction - Students worked with Quizlet set individually - I suggested this order: Flashcards, Learn, Match. I presented pronunciation as whole class.
Vocabulary teamwork/game - Quizlet Live
Writing practice -https://drive.google.com/open?id=1LGn0fiQGlGDArM51D0yvhF9teJVPcLqPWW8fgYR1oCY

Vocabulary Practice - Quizlet Live
Writing practice - Finish or correct Day 1
Interpretive Listening/Intercultural - Quebec en hiver EdPuzzle
DAY 3 (this was to be today - 5 january - but we have a snow day!)
Question - Quelle activité hivernale préferes-tu? - short answer - Level 3 will need to explain WHY - again - complex sentences
Writing Formative Assessment - Hiver au Quebec - Using their vocabulary lists (TPT worksheet, Quizlet), EdPuzzle and their writing practice, students will complete the following:
French 2 - Novice High will write 8-10 sentences explaining the winter experience in Quebec - including weather, landscape, activities and food/drink.
French 3 - Intermediate Low will write 2 paragraphs persuading someone to go to Quebec in the winter, mentioning same items as above. Ideally, incorporating imperatives and modals (pouvoir, devoir, vouloir) as learned structures
(Additionally, I had planned for them to do EdPuzzles about La galette des rois for Epiphany on January 6 - not necessarily part of this mini-unit but culturally relevant)
Question - Quand tu vas au Carnaval de Québec, quelle activité vas-tu faire? - French 2 - multiple choice, incorporate activities from EdPuzzle - French 3 - short answer - complete sentences
Vocabulary Review - Quizlet Live
Formative Assessment - Vocabulary (“reading”) - Quizizz (imported from Quizlet)
Speaking - Find someone who (from the TPT resource)
REFLECTIONS: Moving through Days 1 and 2, I could get a very clear picture of students who are moving from one level to another. The circumlocution-type activity especially showed who was ready to level up. Also, it was impressive to see some of my French 2s try the French 3 work and write complex sentences. Both levels have a broad range of proficiency levels, so creating more activities that bridge both levels will be in my future!
